Servant Leadership:
Servant leadership is a less traditional method of leadership. It focuses more on the thoughts and opinions of those who follow. Rather than telling people what needs to be done, it's trying to help them accomplish their work goals. In servant leadership the needs of the followers is put first, and the leader almost serves their followers (hence the name). Pros: 1. Peoples thoughts and opinions are generally more valued, making people comfortable sharing ideas. 2. People are generally happier, because their personal needs are usually being met more than in directive leadership. Cons: 1. Things may take longer, since people need to agree on what to do. 2. People may not understand what they need to do, because the leader's role is to help people work effectively and accomplish their goals, rather than bossing people around. Directive Leadership: Directive leadership is the more traditional type of leadership that we're all used to. Directive leadership is when the leader has all the power, and tells everyone what to do directly. If they don't comply with the instructions, then there are either direct/implied consequences. Most people have experienced directive leadership more than once in one form or another (parents, teachers, bosses, etc.). Pros: 1. People will usually do as told 2. What needs to be done is clearly communicated by the leader Cons: 1. People may not have their thoughts taken into consideration in decision making. 2. People's happiness while working depends heavily on the leader. Which is more effective: It's hard to say which form of leadership is more effective, and each have many pros and cons. If i had to pick one, I'd chose servant leadership because it requires the workers to be valued. Workers can and are valued under directive leadership as well, but in general servant leadership values them more often. In the end, I'd say the most important thing in effective leadership is the actual leader, rather than form of leadership. There are effective and ineffective leaders who use both forms of leadership, and both work well.
